The Los Angeles Angels face the Athletics in Sacramento on Friday night. It seems like absolutely no one is paying attention to the Angels these days, as they haven’t really been a playoff threat at any point. Yet they just finished sweeping the Dodgers and are sniffing around the .500 mark, plus they are still led by one of baseball’s generational talents in Mike Trout — who can still somehow eat in virtually any restaurant in America without people recognizing him. The Angels are playing well right now and they have their best pitcher on the mound. It seems like a great day to take a swing at an Angels win, so my Angels vs Athletics pick is Los Angeles on the money line.

Yusei Kikuchi will go for the Halos. He has once again put together a steady season. Kikuchi shut down the A’s the only time he faced them this season, going 7.1 scoreless innings. The young A’s lineup has not seen Kikuchi much, but only one player in the projected lineup has ever gotten a hit off him. On the other side, I don’t hate the situation for the Athletics with rookie Jack Perkins on the mound, but he is definitely vulnerable. Perkins is a power pitcher and the Angels lead the league in striking out, so he could find success. Still, he is making only his third start — he will probably cap out around 80 pitches, and he hasn’t been great by any means thus far. I expect a high-K outing of 4 or 5 innings with 3 or 4 runs allowed. Both bullpens are capable of making a mess of things, but I do expect the Angels to head into the late innings with the advantage. Give me the hotter team with its ace on the mound tonight in a game that hardly anyone will care about.
