The Miami Marlins and New York Mets begin a series on Thursday night. The Marlins have hit the skids lately, losing 7 consecutive series. They are catching the Mets at a bad time too, as the Mets just swept the Phillies in a dramatic series. New York has rebuilt their wildcard cushion, and they are back in the hunt for the division crown as we head toward the season’s final month. The most significant factor in the Mets’ hot streak is their team OPS of nearly .850 in August. For a team number, that is especially crazy. I look for the Mets to keep rolling, but paying the freight to back them on Thursday is high, so I am going to pivot to the game total and trust their offense to lead the way.

The Marlins are recalling 24-year-old Adam Mazur to make the start Thursday night. He has 1 Major League start, and that was in June against the Phillies. Mazur allowed 4 runs in that one, but this isn’t really even about him. The projected team total on the Mets is set at 5.5 runs, and this is just not a good time to face them for anyone. On the other side is Clay Holmes. Holmes has rebounded recently from a rough patch, but I worry about him because he shows signs of tiring. The Mets will limit his pitch count, and while the Marlins are not a scary offense at the moment, they do have some young guys who are still playing hard. We should only need 2 or 3 from the Fish to secure the over in this game. Give me the offenses on Thursday.
