The New York Yankees will continue their west coast road trip as they head to Seattle to take on the Seattle Mariners. The Yankees opened their trip in impressive fashion, sweeping the San Francisco Giants, fueled by strong offensive production from Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton. New York’s pitching was just as dominant, allowing only one earned run across the series. The Mariners, meanwhile, split their series with the Cleveland Guardians, highlighted by an 8-0 win last night.

Taking the mound for the Yankees will be Ryan Weathers who finished last season 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA with the Marlins. However, his spring training was shaky, as he allowed 18 runs on 27 hits across 17.1 innings. For Seattle, Luis Castillo gets the nod after finishing last season 11-8 with a 3.54 ERA. He also struggled in the spring, giving up 14 runs on 23 hits over 15 innings pitched. While the Yankees pitching staff has been dominant early in the season – including a bullpen that has yet to allow a run – I don’t fully trust Weathers in this matchup. On the other side, the Mariners have been solid offensively, ranking 6th in OPS (.793), and should be able to put pressure on him early. At the same time, Castillo’s spring struggles opens the door for the Yankees lineup to produce as well, ranking 18th in OPS this season (.692). Given both starters inconsistencies this spring, this matchup sets up well for offense on both sides. Both teams should come out aggressive, and with shaky starting pitching on both ends, runs should come early in this matchup.
