The Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros play the second game of their 3-game set on Wednesday night, with the Phillies sending one of the best pitchers in baseball to the mound. The Astros, who have been hot lately, kept it going on Tuesday with a 1-0 win in a total pitchers’ duel. The Phillies managed to collect only 4 total hits in the game, as their lineup continues to feel a bit thin without Bryce Harper anchoring the middle of the order. Still, I am not in the business of betting against Zack Wheeler, so give me the Phillies on the Money Line in this spot.

Let’s start with Wheeler. There was a weird outlier start against the Braves a few weeks ago where he gave up 6 runs. Aside from that start, he has allowed a total of 2 runs in his last 6 appearances. Bottom line: if I bet on the Phillies and Wheeler lays an egg, I’ll live with it. The Astros will go with Colton Gordon, who, despite being in the league for almost 2 months now, is still a stranger to me. He doesn’t have overpowering stuff, but he has been perfectly adequate as a starter so far. He has yet to face a good offense though, so I’m still considering him unproven. I worry a bit about what happens when Wheeler leaves—the Astros have the #2 bullpen in baseball this season, while the Philadelphia bullpen is a hot mess. Still, they shouldn’t have to cover much with Wheeler on the mound, besides the fact that Houston is almost entirely right-handed at that plate, and that’s likely to be a problem for them with a dominant righty on the hill. Wheeler is a ride-or-die guy for me; he is as reliable as they come. Give me the Phillies.
