It is a short slate of Major League Baseball on Thursday, but we might as well squeeze off a bet before the NFL takes center stage later in the evening. The two best teams in the National League split the first two games of the series, which has been marked more by offense than by pitching so far. But on Thursday, both teams send their best pitcher to the mound, and that has me looking for a pitcher’s duel. It is Ranger Suarez vs Freddy Peralta. Suarez had a couple of forgettable starts in early August, but he has since corrected things. Peralta is maybe the hottest pitcher in baseball right now. He is riding a 4-start, 23-inning scoreless streak. While I don’t want to bet on the scoreless streak continuing, it should not surprise anyone if these two guys turn in 6 solid innings that have us well on our way to the under. Both bullpens are a little bit risky right now, admittedly, as the Brewers are missing their closer and the Phillies have taken turns blowing the lead late in games, so that is a risk here. But this is a bet on the starting pitchers in this spot, ultimately. Give me the under.
