Ronald Acuna is back! The former MVP will return to the Braves lineup this evening, giving a boost to a lineup that has already began to turn the corner following a slow start to the season. Atlanta is in good form overall entering this series, winning 10 of their last 16 games, and they have their ace on the mound tonight with Chris Sale making his 11th start of the year. Sale has been sharp with just 3 earned runs in 19.1 innings this month and 2 or fewer earned runs allowed in each of his last 6 outings. The Padres have not been overly sharp against southpaw pitching in their recent chances, scoring 2 or fewer earned runs off 7 of the last 8 lefties they have seen. Sale should pitch effectively tonight.
Nick Pivetta is a pitcher I am generally a fan of, but he is easily the lesser of today’s starters. Pivetta has benefited from a pitcher-friendly home ballpark for the first time in his career this season, but he is on the road today in a tougher matchup. Atlanta is an above average offense to begin with, but with the added boost of Acuna’s return we should see a fired-up unit today. Pivetta has been prone to allowing home runs in his career and that has been true recently with a homer allowed in 4 straight outings. I favor the Braves tonight.
