Padres vs Red Sox Pickswise Expert Predictions

Run Line PickBest Bet
BOS Red Sox -1.5(+165)

At first glance, this appears to be a competitive pitching matchup, but a deeper dive reveals a clear edge for the Boston Red Sox and more importantly, a strong buy-low opportunity on Sonny Gray. Gray’s first outing with Boston wasn’t inspiring on the surface. He allowed 3 runs over 4 innings in a no-decision loss to Cincinnati, and combined with the Red Sox’s 1-5 start, that’s enough to push public sentiment away. But this is exactly where we step in. One start doesn’t redefine a pitcher with Gray’s track record.

Last season, Gray went 14-8 while striking out over 10 batters per 9 innings and walking fewer than 2. That combination of command and control is rare. His advanced metrics back it up as well, a 3.84 xERA and 3.34 FIP both suggesting that he was significantly better than his 4.28 ERA indicates. In other words, the underlying performance is elite. The San Diego Padres counter with Michael King, a solid frontline arm, but one who doesn’t quite match Gray’s consistency. King also relied on alot of variance to do the heavy lifting for him in 2025 with one of the lowest BABIP’s in all of baseball and an elevated strand rate near 80% on the season. Gray is better than he showed, and Boston is better than its record. But because both have not looked as such recently, Boston is underpriced. That creates value and given the trough in these arms, a multi-run win is not of the question. The best part is we get a great price to take a plunge on the Sox to do so.
