Neither of these teams’ seasons has gone as planned to this point, as the perennial division contenders have sub .500 records, albeit just 8 games into the season. It hasn’t done anything to quiet the concerns of Boston Red Sox fans, who believe the organization isn’t spending enough money to help out the roster. In contrast, San Diego Padres fans know that if they fall too far behind in the National League West, it isn’t easy to get back in the race. Both teams will send their new starting pitchers to the mound for this matchup.

Ranger Suarez’s debut with the Red Sox wasn’t his best, as last season’s breakout star allowed 7 hits and 4 earned runs in just 4.1 innings of work against the Houston Astros. Some Red Sox fans are concerned they spent too much on Suarez, and his first start didn’t quiet those doubters. While the Houston game was ugly, I believe he bounces back against a Padres team ranked among the majors’ worst.

The problem for the Padres is that the Red Sox’s offense isn’t quite as bad, and Walker Buehler hasn’t exactly been Cy Young caliber over the last few seasons. He wasn’t terrible in his first start, with 5 hits and 3 earned runs allowed against the San Francisco Giants, but I’d have some concerns that the Padres can’t outscore whatever lead Buehler gives the Red Sox.
