The Chicago Cubs will host the Seattle Mariners to open a weekend series, and the wind will be blowing out a bit on a mild Chicago afternoon, and the official first day of summer. The Mariners were off Thursday, so they should come in fresh and with everyone available. The Cubs played a barnburner with the Brewers, losing 8-7 despite a spirited comeback. I like the pitching situation better for Seattle, as they send George Kirby to the mound. Kirby got a very late start to the season, and he took a couple starts to round into form, but he seems to be getting stronger as he goes. He is still walking people, something that is incredibly uncharacteristic for Kirby, and once that cleans up, he will string together more zeroes than not. On the other side is Matthew Boyd. He is 2025’s guy who defies logic for me. I feel like he is nowhere near as good as his 2.79 ERA. He does give up some homers, and with the wind blowing out and Seattle hitting best from the left side, this could be a regression spot for Boyd. With a rest advantage, what should be the better starter, and a lineup hitting from the stronger side of their platoon, I think there is enough reason to chase the value with the M’s on Friday afternoon.
