The Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros will meet. for the fifth time this year. Currently, the series is tied between them after the Astros won yesterday’s game 9-2. Both teams hit the ball well, but Seattle starter George Kirby struggled once he got past the third inning. For today, the starters will be Emerson Hancock of the Mariners and Ryan Gusto of the Astros. Hancock is coming off his best start of the year, pitching 4.2 innings against the San Diego Padres and only giving up 6 hits and 1 run. The Mariners are 5-2 when Hancock starts, with all those wins coming by more than 1 run. Additionally, Hancock boasts a 2.91 ERA in away games — only giving up 7 runs in 21.1 innings. For some reason the Mariners have won more games away from Seattle than at home, and Hancock is one of the reasons why.

For the Astros, Gusto is having a brutal month of May. Through 3 games he has pitched 4.0 innings while giving up 9 hits, 7 runs and 7 walks. They are hopeful that he will turn it around, but we cannot be sure. Making things worse for the Astros is the fact that they utilized 4 of their best relievers in yesterday’s game. This means that they may be stuck with the bottom of the bullpen if Gusto is unable to make it deep into the game. This is a point where we can feel more confident in the Mariners’ bullpen, as they used low-leverage arms yesterday. That will leave them with rested closers that will be ready when Hancock leaves the game. Given the form of Gusto and some skepticism around the bullpen performance of the Astros, I’m taking the Mariners to win this one.
