As the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals continue their 4-game series, I completely fail to understand why the Rangers open as favorites in this spot. The Royals are playing hot right now, winning 5 games in a row and 7 of the last 8, and they have actually snuck themselves into the fringes of the playoff hunt somehow. The Rangers are going the other way, losers of 5 of their last 6. For the Rangers, the struggles have been across the board—they have struggled to score all season, and their bullpen, which was strong for most of the year, has fallen completely apart in the past few weeks. I cannot trust the Rangers right now. Give me the Royals at even money.

The Rangers appear set to recall Kumar Rocker to start on Wednesday. Rocker is a very talented pitcher who has thus far struggled to make the transition to the majors and stick. You can see the potential, but there always seems to be that one inning where things get away. He also doesn’t usually work deep into games, and the Royals are good about not striking out and making pitchers execute. It’s a tough spot for Rocker. On the other side is Noah Cameron, the rookie lefty who has been a gift and a surprise to the Royals’ rotation. He isn’t overpowering, but he keeps drawing weak contact. Then there is the bullpen situation for the Rangers, and if they have to cover half the game, I far prefer the KC back-end unit at the moment. Give me the hot team playing at home.
