DAL Mavericks -1.0(-110)

The Memphis Grizzlies and the Dallas Mavericks are 2 Western Conference teams that had hoped to contend in the conference this year, but both have gotten off to slow starts. Saturday night, both teams will meet hoping to begin to turn their season around. The Grizzlies have a record of 5-11 this season, and they have lost 5 of their last 6 games. They are coming off a 137-96 win against the Sacramento Kings in their last game. Santi Aldama led the Grizzlies in scoring with 29 points, and the Grizzlies out-rebounded the Kings by 17. The Mavericks have a record of 5-12 this season with 4 of those wins coming on their home floor. They have won 2 of their last four games, including a win yesterday against the New Orleans Pelicans via a 118-115 decision. Cooper Flagg had a career-high 29 points on 12-of-19 shooting in the win. It was a positive sign for a team that is still waiting for Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving to return from injury.

Both of these teams have had to play through significant injuries to start the season. The Mavericks have been without Irving, Davis, and Dereck Lively II for a majority of the opening month. Likely will be a game-time decision if he plays tonight. The Grizzlies have had to play with Jaren Jackson Jr, Ja Morant and Brandon Clarke sidelined for a majority of games. Morant and Clarke will miss again tonight, while Jackson Jr. will be a game-time decision. The Grizzlies injuries may prove to be more significant in this matchup with Dallas. On top of Morant’s injury, other key ball handlers such as Ty Jerome, Scotty Pippen Jr. and Javon Small will also be out with injury. That leaves a lot of pressure on Vince Williams Jr. and Jaylen Wells to run the offense and control the pace in the back court. The Mavericks’ back court of Brandon Williams and Max Christie should be able to put a lot of pressure on the Grizzlies’ guards and force turnovers. I like for the Mavericks to defend their home court tonight and win their second straight game.
