Reasoning

It’s almost been a month since Victor Wembanyama went down with a calf injury, and yet the Spurs haven’t fallen off that much in his absence. De’Aaron Fox and co. have won 8 of 11 games, the biggest strength of this team appears to be their ability to win games in the clutch. Only 4 teams in the league have played in more clutch games than the Spurs have, San Antonio has the 3rd best win percentage in those situations, which isn’t something we should disregard easily here. Their last 4 wins have been by a combined 15 points, I’m interested to see how they do in this elimination scenario with an NBA Cup semifinal spot on the line.

The Lakers have been great in the clutch too, they actually have a 100% record in those situations winning all 8 games so far. LeBron James bounced back with a massive game in Philadelphia over the weekend as the Lakers won by 4 points to get back in the win column. Luka Doncic also returned to the line-up after missing a couple of games, a lot will depend on the way he performs for the Lakers here. These two teams were separated by just 2 points when they first met this season back in early November. The Lakers played catch-up for the most part in that game, coming back from as much as 12 points to win.

I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time imagining a scenario where the NBA Cup is being played in Vegas and the Lakers aren’t there. That said, I do believe the Spurs won’t go away without a fight here. The spread is set at 5.5 points, and after seeing a couple of not-so-close games on Tuesday, I feel like we could be in for a dramatic ending in at least 1 of the 2 games on Wednesday. I’ll give the Spurs the benefit of the doubt on the road, so let’s back San Antonio plus the extra points.

Reasoning

De’Aaron Fox over 22.5 points (-125)

De’Aaron Fox is coming into this matchup after a relatively quite game against the New Orleans Pelicans. However, it was his first game over the last 5 contests in which he did not reach the 25-point mark. Against a Lakers team with Luka Doncic guarding him on the perimeter and Deandre Ayton being the rim protector, Fox should thrive once more. The Lakers are 27th this season in blocks per game, so look for one of the fastest point guards in the league to have success beating his man off the dribble and finishing inside. In 4 games against the Lakers last season he averaged 28.5 points per game and there is nothing to suggest a drop off tonight.

Dylan Harper over 12.5 points (+100)

Another player who should benefit from the lack of rim protection should be Dylan Harper. The rookie has been fairly inconsistent from deep but had been fantastic at beating his man on the perimeter and attacking the rim. It has allowed him to score 13 or more points in 4 of his last 5 games. That includes a 22-point performance against a Pelicans team that has equally poor rim protection. He will be matched up against Gabe Vincent who is an undersized guard off the bench and should have trouble contesting his shots. Look for Harper to keep his scoring streak going in this one.

Rui Hachimura over 1.5 made threes (+102)

Rui Hachimura has been playing a bigger role as a floor spacer and it is something he has been very successful at. To start the month of December he has managed to convert 47.1% of his 3-point attempts. He has been an incredibly consistent nearly all season too, having knocked down 2 or more 3-point attempts in 14 of his last 17 games. The Spurs should not be able to slow him down, as over the last 10 games they are middle of the pack in opponent 3-point percentage, ranking 14th. Hachimura could also be utilized as a stretch 5, with the aim of getting Luke Kornet away from the rim. Expect him to get his fair share of shooting opportunities as a result.
