Just because the NFL season has come to an end doesn’t mean football entirely vacates the sports headlines. The XFL begins this weekend and NFL free agency is only a month away. As if that isn’t enough, the 2023 NFL Draft takes place a month after free agency begins. Right now it is Lamar Jackson dominating the news, as there are rumors that he could leave the Baltimore Ravens even though they are expected to put the franchise tag on him. One quarterback who is definitely on the move is Derek Carr, as he recently became a free agent after getting released by the Las Vegas Raiders.

Let’s take a look at some of the top NFL free agents heading into the new league year.

NFL Free Agency: Quarterbacks

Lamar Jackson
Derek Carr
Geno Smith
Daniel Jones
Jimmy Garoppolo

There are conflicting opinions when it comes to Jackson’s status with the Ravens. On one hand, it would be borderline criminal to save money and let a proven franchise quarterback (and former NFL MVP winner!) walk to a new team, even if it’s via trade and commands a hefty price tag in return. On the other hand, bridges in Baltimore may have already burned.

Meanwhile, Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo are certain to be going elsewhere; Geno Smith and Daniel Jones are pretty much locks to stay in place. And don’t forget about Aaron Rodgers. Although Rodgers isn’t technically a free agent, overriding belief is that he has played his last snap with the Green Bay Packers. Are the New York Jets a possibility?

NFL Free Agency: Running Backs

Saquon Barkley
Josh Jacobs
Miles Sanders
Jamaal Williams
Rashaad Penny

NFL Free Agency: Wide Receivers

Odell Beckham Jr.
Jakobi Meyers
JuJu Smith-Schuster
Mecole Hardman
DJ Chark

NFL Free Agency: Offensive linemen

Orlando Brown
Mike McGlinchy
Isaiah Wynn
Kaleb McGary
Ethan Pocic

NFL Free Agency: Defensive Linemen

Javon Hargrave
Fletcher Gox
Da’Ron Payne
Dalvin Tomlinson
Marcus Davenport

NFL Free Agency: Linebackers

Lavonte David
TJ Edwards
Ogbonnia Okoronkwo
Melvin Ingram
Leighton Vander Esch

NFL Free Agency: Defensive Backs

Jamel Dean
Jessie Bates
James Bradberry
Jordan Poyer
CJ Gardner-Johnson

Do you see a trend on the defensive side of the ball? Yes, the Philadelphia Eagles are on course to lose a lot (of players, not necessarily a lot of games) following their Super Bowl appearance. Javon Hargrave, Fletcher Cox, TJ Edwards, James Bradberry and CJ Gardner-Johnson are all set to hit the free-agent market. The Eagles have to pay quarterback Jalen Hurts, too, so that will eat up much of the funds. Hargrave will be especially coveted by other teams after racking up a career-high 29 sacks this past season.
