I've been a capper since my love for sports met my proficiency with numbers and math. The NFL and NCAAF have always been my first loves, followed by the NHL. Although I prefer sports that involve hitting people, I still love capping MLB, soccer, tennis, and even some esports. Living in Florida has its perks like year-round sports of any kind. Since the all-star break, the NHL schedule has been much more balanced. That provides us with a solid 8-game Thursday night slate. Even if you aren’t feeling many of the sides and totals, we have you covered with the player prop market. Before we dive in, it’s worth noting that targeting skaters on the Jets against the Blue Jackets and Golden Knights against the Sharks should also be considered. However, we’ve found great value elsewhere, so let’s get into it. Along with our player props, be sure to check out all of our NHL picks for today’s action.

Sebastian Aho over 1.5 points (+165)

One of the first puck-drops takes place in Carolina, which is one of the most difficult places to play. That’s just the cherry on top given the matchup taking place. The Hurricanes, the 2nd-best team in the NHL, are hosting the Montreal Canadiens, the 2nd-worst team in the Eastern Conference. Admittedly, the Habs are on a 3-game win streak, but those were all at home and the most recent was against a terrible Chicago Blackhawks team. Tonight will be quite the wake-up call when they take on Sebastian Aho and the ‘Canes.

We’re expecting a big night from Carolina’s center. The 25-year-old has feasted on the Canadiens in his career, recording multiple points in each of his last 3 games against them. He’s also the leader on the powerplay unit, which should be in for plenty of ice time with Montreal committing the 2nd-most penalties in the league. Coupled with the Canadiens having the 4th-worst penalty kill unit, Aho could record both of these points with the man advantage. Regardless, Montreal is allowing the 7th-most goals per game both overall and on the road, so we’ll support a big night for Aho and company.

Dougie Hamilton over 0.5 assists (-110)

Before we dive into our play on another skater wearing red and black, be sure to check out teammate Nico Hischier as a parlay piece if you have that option. Rather than paying a premium on a guy who is more difficult to predict a goal or assist for, we’ll back the New Jersey Devils defenseman. Hamilton and company are going on the road to St. Louis to take on the Blues, but being away from home only provides us with better odds. The Devils are behind only the Hurricanes that we just discussed, and it’s on Hamilton and others to step up with Jack Hughes sidelined with an injury.

The Blues were able to shock the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night, but we’re not reading into that 1 game enough to deter us from this play. Despite that victory, St. Louis is still allowing the 6th-most goals per game. Goaltender Jordan Binnington simply does not look good this season, and Hamilton has enjoyed facing St. Louis. He’s recorded an assist in each of the last 3 meetings and 4 of the last 5. Of Hamilton’s 52 points through 53 games, 37 have been assists. He does enjoy taking his shots, yet he’s still much more prone to assisting guys like Hischier to find the back of the net. He also leads the team with over 22 minutes of ice time per game, so there should be plenty of opportunities for Hamilton to cash this prop for us.
