The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most maligned teams in American sports these days, and it’s easy to see why. Much like their counterparts in Austin, Texas at the collegiate level, the Cowboys often have high expectations and repeatedly fall short of those expectations, particularly once the playoffs start. With that being said, is the hype justified for Dallas this season? Can the Cowboys finally make the leap and win a weaker NFC? Let’s take a look at some of the odds and best bets to be made on the Dallas Cowboys in 2023.

Dallas Cowboys 2022 NFL season recap

The 2022 campaign was one of the best in recent memory for a Cowboys organization that had come up short in the regular season time and again. Not only did Dallas make the playoffs, but it did so in emphatic fashion, finishing with a 12-5 record and narrowly missing out on an NFC East crown. The Cowboys finally won a playoff game by beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round before being outclassed by the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round.

Dallas Cowboys 2023 NFL season predictions

As the odds indicate, the Cowboys are certainly expected to be a playoff team in what is a weak NFC. While it is enticing to fade the perennially underachieving Cowboys, the regular season is not the time to do it, especially with the amount of talent Dallas will be putting on the field each week. Is this finally the year the Cowboys break through and make an NFC Championship Game, or will their reputation as underachievers continue? Let’s get into my predictions for this Cowboys team.

Best bet: Dallas Cowboys to win exactly 10 games (+550)

On first glance, the Cowboys roster is as good as its been in years, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. We all know about Micah Parsons and what he brings to the table, but the likes of DeMarcus Lawrence, Leighton Vander Esch and Trevon Diggs are all among the elite at their position. It’s the offense where Dallas should have the most questions in theory, with Brandin Cooks and Michael Gallup assuming the primary wide receiver roles behind CeeDee Lamb. However, the offensive line should still be as good as ever and I’m expecting another consistently strong season from Dak Prescott under center. The schedule is extremely difficult, as Dallas draws the AFC East, plus the 49ers, Seahawks, Chargers and Lions. I lean over on the win total, but I’d rather take a shot on exactly 10 wins than lay the -162 juice on a win total over.

Dallas Cowboys season record prediction: 10-7

As stated in the above section, it’s entirely possible that the Cowboys finish with a record of 11-6, or even 12-5 if everything breaks right. However, this is a brutal schedule and it’s also well with reason to see Dallas suffering some key injuries and winning just 9 games. I’ve opted to split the difference, with my projections having the Cowboys as a favorite in 12 games, including each of their contests at home. It’s really the opening and closing stretches of the schedule that could deaden the momentum of an otherwise excellent regular season, particularly the consecutive road games in Buffalo and Miami coming right after an intense rivalry matchup against the Eagles. I’m a little more bullish on the Cowboys than in most years, but 10-7 is still the safe play.
