Expert MLB best bets, picks and predictions today, 7/7: Back this plus-odds pick on Friday

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Andrew Abbott (41) returns to the dugout after the top of the first inning of the MLB National League game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Colorado Rockies at Great American Ball Park in downtown Cincinnati on Wednesday, June 21, 2023. The game was tied 3-3 after five innings.

We’re nearly into the weekend, but first, we have a huge MLB slate today. We have a offensive juggernaut matchup between the Braves and Rays in Tampa Bay, but there’s plenty of other action too, including Alek Manoah returning after a brief stint in the Minors and Carlos Rodon making his Yankees debut.

Cincinnati Reds ML (+105) over Milwaukee Brewers

The future is now in Cincinnati. The youthful Reds lineup has come together brilliantly, which has led to their offense becoming extremely explosive. Heading into tonight’s game against the Brewers, they have won 5 in a row and 8 of their last 9 and that has shot them to the forefront of the NL Central standings. The young lineup has been at its best against right-handed pitchers as the Reds have a 123 wRC+ against righties in the last 30 days. That’s the 3rd-best in baseball during that time with only the Braves and Angels above them. The right-hander standing in their way of a 6th straight win is the former Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes. The ace has had a solid season for Milwaukee, but a concerning part of his game is his home and away splits. On the road, he has a 3.76 ERA and is allowing just a .198 batting average. However, on his home mound, Burnes’ ERA shoots to 4.27.

Cincinnati’s Andrew Abbott is the real deal. He’s just one of the many rookie sensations on the Reds right now, but unlike Matt McLain, Elly De La Cruz or Spencer Steer, he’s on the hill and not in the box. In 6 starts for Abbott, he has a 1.21 ERA paired with a 2.68 xERA. He has allowed no more than 1 run in 5 of his 6 starts and has shut down some of the better offenses in baseball such as the Orioles, Astros and Padres. The southpaw is coming off a career-best start against San Diego as he tossed 7.2 innings of 1-run ball and gave up just 4 hits while striking out 12. He’s getting a ton of swings and misses against his fastball and curveball combination, and that shouldn’t stop tonight against an inconsistent Brewers lineup that ranks 26th against fastballs and 24th against curveballs.
