Guatemala vs Jamaica expert picks for Sunday’s CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal

Guatemala vs Jamaica best bet: Jamaica ML (-150, DraftKings)

Jamaica made a fantastic start to the CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage, holding co-hosts the United States to a 1-1 draw in a game the Caribbean nation could easily have won. The Reggae Boyz have since posted a pair of comfortable successes against Trinidad & Tobago (4-1) and Saint Kitts & Nevis (5-0), but still finished 2nd in the group as the American side beat both those opponents 6-0. The Jamaicans have done nothing wrong to this point, though, and should be able to secure a semifinal place by beating Guatemala in Cincinnati on Sunday.

Guatemala scored narrow wins over Guadeloupe and Cuba and played out a goalless game against favorites Canada in Group D, finishing on top of the standings as the Canadians also dropped points against Guadeloupe. Jamaica was perhaps unfortunate to finish only 2nd in its group, but has been lucky to face the weakest of the group winners in the quarterfinals. Guatemala has not progressed past this stage at a Gold Cup since 1996 and that trend seems set to continue. Their hopes lie with Real Salt Lake forward Rubio Rubin, who has scored 2 goals in the tournament, but Jamaica’s roster is of a higher caliber and includes EPL players such as Michail Antonio and Demarai Gray. The favorites should progress to the last four with few issues.
