The Angels and Astros are in the midst of their final series of the season. After last night, Houston has won 11 of their 16 meetings. It’s safe to say that the Angels haven’t had the season they were expecting. Meanwhile, the Astros are the betting favorites to win the American League and return to the World Series.

Despite the lopsided records, Los Angeles does have the reigning AL MVP in Shohei Ohtani and 3-time MVP-winner Mike Trout. That always makes these matchups interesting to break down. Along with this same game parlay, be sure to check out our MLB picks for all of today’s games.

Angels -1.5 (+188)

Shohei Ohtani 2+ total bases (+110)

Parlay odds: +399

Let’s take a closer look at each leg of our same game parlay.

Los Angeles Angels -1.5 (+188) over Houston Astros

Despite the Astros being the class of the American League, they aren’t nearly as big favorites as usual. That’s due to Ohtani getting the nod for the Angels. Otherwise, we would see something like Houston at a -225 price, similar to last night’s matchup. That should illustrate just how incredible Ohtani continues to be. The term generational talent is thrown around when discussing him, and it’s for good reason. He’s doing things that haven’t been done since Babe Ruth, or ever.

Ohtani went on a streak of 6 straight games recording double-digit strikeouts this season. That’s incredible enough, and during that span was a 12-strikeout performance against the Astros. Keep in mind that Houston has struck out the 2nd-fewest times in the league. The Angels went on to win that game in dominating fashion, 7-1. Ohtani also recorded 2 RBI, and Mike Trout wasn’t even in the lineup. Trout has since returned, and Ohtani continues to mash at the plate. While he’s busy racking up Ks, he also has 33 home runs, the 2nd-most in the AL. The Astros may be the better team over a large sample size, but the Angels can steal this game behind Ohtani.

Shohei Ohtani 2+ total bases (+110)

Just as it should be the Ohtani show on the mound, he should help his own cause at the plate. We’ve already touched on his 33 home runs, but he’s done more than just hit the deep ball. His 86 RBI are also the 4th-most in the AL, and his 6 triples are the 2nd-most. Along with his 22 doubles, he’s racked up 265 total bases. That’s tied for the 2nd-most in the AL, behind only Aaron Judge and ahead of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. If not for Judge, Ohtani would almost certainly be winning back-to-back MVP awards. He’ll also be hitting against Astros starter Jose Urquidy tonight. He already has a double and homer against him, giving him a .583 slugging percentage. After seeing Ohtani record 14 bases in their previous series and 2 last night, he can handle just 2 more tonight.
