It didn’t take long for Juan Soto to get his revenge against his former team. After being traded just 10 days prior, the Padres crushed the Nationals 10-5 after taking an 8-0 lead by the top of the 5th inning. That was the series opener on Friday, and now they need to bounce back from last night’s upset in the first game of the day on Sunday. Just as ESPN has the featured night game, Peacock has been featuring the game that starts the afternoon slate. As if the Padres weren’t already in the spotlight enough recently, they will be even more so today. Along with this same game parlay, be sure to check out our thoughts on the side and total for all of today’s games.

Padres -2.5 (-108)

Over 8.5 total runs (-138)

Josh Bell 2+ total bases (-120)

Let’s take a closer look at each leg of our same game parlay.

San Diego Padres -2.5 (-108) over Washington Nationals

This game opened  at -120 on the standard -1.5 run line. It almost immediately jumped to around -155, and the move is understandable. There is simply too wide of a talent gap between these teams. Last night was quite the letdown spot after Friday’s emotional revenge win for Soto, and something that should be taken with a grain of salt. They’re in a great position for the NL wildcard, but need to bounce back.

After a shaky start with a series against the Dodgers, the Padres closed out their previous series against the Giants by scoring 20 runs across the last 2 games, and dominated to begin this series. Along with Soto, Josh Bell and Brandon Drury have fit in nicely with Manny Machado. They’ll need to continue to do so with the recent news of Fernando Tatis Jr.’s suspension. While that is a huge story on its own, it won’t be affecting this game. Instead, it will be the other aforementioned hitters facing the league’s worst pitching staff.

It’s not quite Patrick Corbin day, but starter Paolo Espino still has yet to record a win this season. He started out the year in the bullpen, and shouldn’t be expected to have a long outing. That’s just more great news for Soto and company as the Nats have the league’s 7th-worst bullpen. San Diego starter Blake Snell may not be their ace, but he hasn’t allowed more than a single run in any of his last 4 starts. With Washington’s depleted lineup and bolstering the Padres’ at the same time, Snell should be able to grab his 4th win in his last 5 starts in convincing fashion.

Over 8.5 total runs (-138)

Using just a slightly alternate total helped us cash our same game parlay for the series opener between these teams, so let’s trust it once again. Convincing wins has been a theme for Snell recently. Not only that, his new stacked lineup has supported him enough to make them high-scoring games as well. Snell’s last start of July was a dominating 10-1 win over the Twins, and his first start of this month was a 9-1 win over the Rockies. Those are important to note, as it demonstrates the Padres can keep their opponent in check while still going over the total.

The Nats’ depleted lineup would be the biggest concern for this play, and that helps alleviate that. Those games also took place in San Diego, which isn’t nearly as hitter-friendly as Nationals Stadium. The opener was the best display of that, as both teams were able to produce in that 10-5 win. Even if Snell has another stellar performance, the Padres also proved they can exploit Washington’s poor pitching staff enough to cover the total on their own. The Padres’ 3 games prior to last night each ended with at least 11 runs, so expect another game similar to the opener of this series.

Josh Bell 2+ total bases (-120)

Soto came through with this prop in the series opener same game parlay, so let’s support Bell getting his revenge to close out the series. He hasn’t had the weekend he was hoping for against his former team, but that certainly doesn’t mean he isn’t capable. While Soto may get the majority of the attention, it’s actually Bell with more total bases this season. His 192 has him ahead by just a bit over Soto’s 187, and he has massive power.

He’s simply physically huge, and it’s transitioned into 25 doubles, 3 triples, and 14 home runs. Even if he doesn’t cash this with a single swing, his 119 hits are tied for the 7th-most in the National League. Of course he racked up the majority of them in Nationals Stadium. With him comfortable in the ballpark, in a featured game, and wanting to get his revenge before leaving town, let’s bank on Bell ringing true.
