We are wrapping up the last full week of the 2022 Major League Baseball season with a 15-game slate on Sunday. It includes an absolutely crucial National League East showdown between the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves, which is obviously getting ESPN Sunday Night Baseball treatment.

For this parlay we are going with two favorites on the run line and one underdog on the money line pick. Let’s break down each of the legs.

Miami Marlins ML over Milwaukee Brewers (+145)

The Brewers blew yet another late lead to the Marlins last night, as closer Devin Williams surrendered a go-ahead, 2-run single in the 9th inning. Milwaukee sits 1 game back of the Phillies for the final Wild Card spot in the National League, and need to win to boost their chances of overtaking that final spot — but it is evident that the pressure is getting to them as the season comes to a close. The Marlins have nothing to play for but that lack of pressure is evident on the playing field, as they look much more loose on the mound and at the plate. Milwaukee faced two tough hard-throwing Miami pitchers over the past two nights in Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera, and will run into another sneaky good pitcher today in Pablo Lopez.

Lopez may not throw as hard as his teammates from the previous games, but he has a respectable 3.90 ERA and 3.77 FIP — relying on weak contact to navigate through an opposing lineup. Opposing Lopez will be Freddy Peralta for the Brewers, who will likely serve as the opener for a bullpen game. Peralta is the pitcher who surrendered the go-ahead grand slam to Avisail Garcia in the 8th inning on Thursday night, so he may only be asked to go a few innings. Miami looks like the better and more relaxed team.

Chicago Cubs -1.5 over Cincinnati Reds (+125)

After yesterday’s win, the Cubs have now won 5 straight games and can end the season on a real high. It hasn’t been the season Chicago was hoping for, but the sweep of Philadelphia during the week may keep the Phillies out of the postseason. Meanwhile, the Reds have been terrible virtually the entire year ever since their 3-22 start. They traded away their best 2 starting pitchers and best 2 hitters at the trade deadline and have been waving the white flag ever since. A lack of starters is what has Chase Anderson starting this game on Sunday. The 9-year veteran is usually a reliever but has been thrust into the rotation out of necessity. Therefore, it’s unlikely he lasts deep into the game and he just lost his last start to a terrible Pirates team. Marcus Stroman should have no trouble leading the red-hot Cubs to another victory.

San Diego Padres -1.5 over Chicago White Sox (+155)

With a win over the White Sox last night and a blown save and loss for the Brewers, the Padres’ magic number is 1. That means with a win today or a Milwaukee loss, the Padres clinch a wild card in the National League and would make the playoffs for only the 2nd time since 2006. Meanwhile, it has been a disappointing season for a White Sox team entering the year with high hopes and aspirations far beyond just reaching the playoffs. Their season was quickly defined by injuries and questionable decision-making by the manager Tony La Russa, whom many don’t think will return to manage the Sox in 2023.

A team favored to win the AL Central will finish either 2nd or 3rd behind the Guardians, who clinched the division a week ago today. For the Padres, Blake Snell will take the ball in what has been a complete 180 flip in the 2nd half for the left-hander. Before the all-star break, Snell had a 5.22 ERA and surrendered 31 walks in 50.0 innings. Since the break he has a 2.25 ERA with 19 walks in 72.0 innings. Look for the Padres to get the job done today and clinch a spot in the playoffs.
