MLB Win Totals 2023: Predictions, Odds, Lines & Best Bets for MLB season: Jazz Chisholm and the Marlins make some noise

Miami Marlins second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. (2) watches his solo home run against the Philadelphia Phillies during the seventh inning at Citizens Bank Park.

One of the most popular MLB futures markets is the win totals. At each sportsbook, oddsmakers set a number of wins that they believe the team will have in the 162-game season. You can then bet the over or the under, depending on if you think the team will surpass expectations, crumble under pressure or believe the total has been incorrectly set.

When betting on win totals, it is crucial to shop around. Sportsbooks will not always have the same win total projection or odds, so be sure to shop around for the best price for your pick. By betting on a win total of a team, you can be invested in each game of the team’s season.

I’ve listed all the MLB win totals below with my win total best bets for the 2023 season.

MLB Win Totals 2023 Best Bets

Boston Red Sox Under 78.5 wins (+100)

Available at DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing

The Red Sox are no longer a threat in the AL East. They’ve slowly fallen to the bottom of the division while the Yankees, Blue Jays, Rays and Orioles have built around their young players to create a playoff-worthy team. Boston could have done that but instead let Xander Bogaerts, J.D. Martinez, Nathan Eovaldi and Michael Wacha walk in free agency. The problem with that is their prospects are still a year or two away from being capable of being in an MLB lineup, so they’ve had to build a bridge to their future by signing Corey Kluber, Adam Duvall, Justin Turner and Kenley Jansen. These additions would be impressive if it was four or five years ago, but these players are towards the end of their careers now. Duvall is the youngest of the four at 34 years old, so Boston is a team with a bunch of older veterans and younger players that have not seen 100 at-bats at the MLB level.

However, the worst part of their team will be its pitching. The rotation is Kluber, Chris Sale, Nick Pivetta, Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford, and there’s a good chance the Sox finish with one of the highest ERAs in the league this season. Boston won 78 games in 2022 and not only lost its 1-2 punch in their rotation but also its3-4 hitters in the lineup. I envision a 75-87 season for the Red Sox.

Chicago White Sox Over 82.5 wins (-105)

Available at DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing

Chicago’s 2022 season can be summed up in one word: mediocre. The White Sox finished 81-81 and were plagued with injuries that kept them from reaching their potential. However, heading into the 2023 season, the White Sox’s roster is the healthiest it has ever been. Tim Anderson, Yoan Moncada, Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert all appear to be ready to go for Opening Day, and joining them will be Andrew Benintendi. The lefty outfielder was Chicago’s biggest offseason acquisition, and he was a great one. He is consistent at the plate with a strong arm and exceptional defense, so Chicago will have a stacked lineup with Benintendi sliding into the 2 or 3 spot.

They also have a very underrated pitching staff that is headlined by a player that does not get the recognition he deserves. Dylan Cease was fantastic in 2022 with a 2.20 ERA and a 2.70 xERA in 184 innings, and he will lead a staff made of Lance Lynn, Lucas Giolito, Michael Kopech and Mike Clevinger. Jose Abreu’s bat will be missed in the lineup, but Chicago is more than capable of winning 83 games this season and being a dark horse in the AL Central.

Miami Marlins Over 75.5 wins (-105)

Available at Caesars Sportsbook at time of publishing

There were several big moves this offseason, like Jacob deGrom to the Rangers and Justin Verlander to the Mets. But one transaction that seemed to not get as much attention was Luis Arraez to the Marlins. While it may not have gotten the same hype as other moves, it was a huge splash for the Fish. Arraez beat out Aaron Judge for the best batting average in the American League last season and proved to be one of the best pure hitters in baseball. At the top of Miami’s order, they will have Arraez, MLB The Show 23 cover athlete Jazz Chisholm Jr., Jorge Soler and Garrett Cooper. It may not be the best top four in the National League, but that’s not what makes the Marlins special. They added several key pieces to put at the bottom of the order, like Yuli Gurriel and Jean Segura, so they won’t have many easy outs in their lineup.

I like their lineup, but I’m even more impressed with their rotation. Sandy Alcantara is the reigning NL Cy Young, and he is the star of a rotation that has Jesus Luzardo, Trevor Rogers, Johnny Cueto and Edward Cabrera. If Rogers can get back to his 2021 self and Cabrera takes another step forward in his development, Miami has a very strong rotation. The scheduling change will also benefit the Marlins since they play the Mets, Braves and Phillies a combined 39 times instead of 57. A 78-84 season is more than feasible for this Miami team.

Arizona Diamondbacks Over 75.5 wins (-105)

Available at DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing

I got weirdly into the Diamondbacks last season. I was blown away by Zac Gallen and ended up watching a lot more games than I anticipated, and that gave me a good idea as to where Arizona could be at the end of the 2023 season. The D-Backs might be the most underrated team in the league this year — not in the way that they could sneak into the playoffs, but they could take a huge step forward in their development. Their rotation is led by Gallen, who was one of the best pitchers in all of baseball last year. He is followed by Merrill Kelly, Madison Bumgarner, Zach Davies and Ryne Nelson. I am a huge fan of Nelson, who had a 1.47 ERA and 2.24 xERA in 18.1 innings last year. He faced the Padres twice and the Dodgers once, so the Diamondbacks threw him into the deep end in his first few starts. The Arizona rotation could surprise some teams, but it’s unfortunate that they are in the NL West.

As for their offense, they acquired Lourdes Gurriel Jr. from the Blue Jays to add a veteran presence and another powerful bat to their young lineup. He will bat behind The Flash, or more commonly known as Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte, Jake McCarthy and Christian Walker. The top of the Arizona order is not the most well known, but it might be after this season. I love everything about the Diamondbacks; if they were able to win 74 games in 2022, they are more than capable of winning 76 games with the scheduling changes in 2023.
