I've been a capper since my love for sports met my proficiency with numbers and math. The NFL and NCAAF have always been my first loves, followed by the NHL. Although I prefer sports that involve hitting people, I still love capping MLB, soccer, tennis, and even some esports. Living in Florida has its perks like year-round sports of any kind. There are just 4 games on the Friday NHL slate, but we have still found 3 great plays for an incredible payout. Regardless of the smaller schedule, it’s still exciting to have hockey back in action. We have already seen some surprising upsets and are analyzing how players on new teams are fitting in. While we are tracking everything to provide you with the best information and plays, let’s check out our favorite plays to get the weekend started.

Before we dive in, be sure to check out our NHL picks for Friday’s action.

Tampa Bay Lightning -1.5 (+150) over Columbus Blue Jackets

Let’s drop our metaphorical puck with the Lightning taking care of business over the Jackets. Tampa Bay has been to the last 3 Stanley Cup Finals and is looking to continue its dynasty. The Bolts are going to be out with a vengeance after dropping their season opener to the Rangers.

New York was able to get some revenge earlier this week for losing to the Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals last season, but Columbus didn’t even make the postseason in 2021-22. As one who projects some progression from the Jackets, that doesn’t mean they are up to the caliber of Tampa Bay. Columbus dropped its season opener in convincing fashion, losing to the Hurricanes 4-1 on home ice. The Jackets will get to remain at home for this matchup, but playing on the road does not affect seasoned veterans like Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov. The first 2 times  these teams met last season were quite the beatdowns, as well; the Lightning won those matchups by a combined score of 11-3. We only need them to win by 2 goals for this play, so trust the juggernaut that is Tampa Bay to keep things rolling.

Detroit Red Wings -1.5 (+160) over Montreal Canadiens

After targeting one of perennial favorites to win the Stanley Cup, we’re making a big transition to the Red Wings. Despite them not posing much of a threat in recent years, they look poised for a massive turnaround. The combination of young talent, veteran leadership and new faces should have Detroit fans excited to open the season on Friday.

Defenseman Moritz Seider won the Calder Trophy for the NHL’s Rookie of the Year last season and Lucas Raymond was another candidate. The Wings also made a huge upgrade at goaltender by signing Vile Husso from the Blues. Also coming over from St. Louis was David Perron, joining former Ranger Andrew Copp. Those guys know what it takes for deep postseason runs and alongside former Panther Ben Chariot, the Red Wings are going to look like an entirely different team. They only played the Habs at home once last season but won that matchup. Similarly, they have beaten Montreal in 5 of the last 7 meetings. Back them to take their season opener in convincing fashion on home ice.

Winnipeg Jets ML (-115) over New York Rangers

For our last play we only need a victory rather than a team to cover the puck line. The evenly-priced matchup illustrates this should be a close game, despite first looking at the team names. The Rangers clearly had the more successful season last year, but that doesn’t mean the Jets are incapable of winning their season opener on home ice.

These teams don’t meet often, but the Rangers having to travel up to Winnipeg is a great benefit for the Jets right off the bat. New York has already had to host a tough team in the Lightning on Tuesday then played in Minnesota on Thursday and now has to head up to Canada for this game just hours later. With that in mind, that means New York will not be starting Igor Shesterkin — who is a vital part of their success. On top of that, they sent a very solid backup goaltender in Alexander Georgiev to the defending Stanley Cup champion Avalanche. Winnipeg goaltender Connor Hellebuyck led the NHL in saves last season and can help the Jets take off in 2022-23.
