I favor the over on the posted game total in Wednesday’s matchup between the Boston Red Sox and The Athletics. Boston enters this game 16 games over .500 as they approach the end of the regular season, and these final weeks are about solidufying their positioning and preparing for postseason play. They have a young roster with several new faces and it will be interesting to see if they can mesh well enough to truly compete at the end. Regardless, they will start Payton Tolle today for his 3rd MLB outing. While I am a fan of the prospect, he is extremely fastball heavy, pitching on 4 days rest for the first time in his MLB career, and is on the road in a tough pitching environment.

Mason Barnett is set to make his 3rd MLB appearance as well in this game, and his first 2 outings resulted in 2 shaky outings. His first appearance was against the Rangers, allowing 8 hits with 5 earned runs in 5 innings of work. He was a bit better against the Angels last time out but still allowed 4 earned runs in 5 innings of work. Until he finds his form it is hard to suggest backing Barnett, especially against a quality lineup like Boston.
