While not my favorite game on Friday’s loaded MLB slate, I do lean toward a competitive game between the White Sox of Chicago and the Detroit Tigers. These divisional opponents meet several times per season but with the 2025 campaign running out these teams have full familiarity at this point. The White Sox have had another rough season, entering this game with a 53-88 record. It has been hard to pinpoint when they will be competitive, let alone win, but today’s matchup seems like a spot they can compete in. Shane Smith has been one of their stronger starting options this season and he enters this game in good form with a 2.67 ERA across 33.2 innings in the month of August.

Jack Flaherty did not have as strong of an August, posting a 5.51 ERA in his 32.2 innings of work. Flaherty allowed 5 or more earned runs 3 times within that span including a poor outing against this same White Sox lineup. Chicago was able to earn 8 hits off the right-hander in its 22 plate appearances against him, and with a close proximity rematch it should find relative success again.
