Seth Lugo has pitched well to begin his 2025 campaign, tossing 11.1 innings of 2-run ball against the Braves and Brewers. Lugo was outstanding for the Royals in 2024, finishing with a 3.00 ERA across 206.2 innings of work. In 2025, he jumped out to a fast start before falling apart in August, allowing a 9.11 ERA across his final 26.2 frames. Lugo showed serious signs of regression in that stretch of play, and his season long projections heading into 2026 are not overly favorable. OOPSY is widely regarded as the premier projection service for season long pitching projections, and they have Lugo tabbed for a 4.85 ERA this season.

That same OOPSY projection system has White Sox starter Anthony Kay set for a 4.22 ERA in 2026. Kay spent the last 2 seasons in the NPB refining his craft, and he has since returned to an MLB rotation. He is a southpaw who pitches to contact and tries to induce softly hit balls for his defense to field. He won’t blow you away on the radar gun and his control has been subpar through 2 starts, but I cannot justify backing Lugo and the Royals at such heavy pricing. Chicago has shown patience atop their batting order, and I favor them in Thursday’s gam given current pricing.
