After an embarrassing 11-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Friday, the Cleveland Guardians rebounded in a big way Saturday, blanking the Bravos by a score of 6-0. It was the first shutout win for Cleveland this season thanks to an incredible showing from rookie lefty Parker Messick, who threw 6.2 innings and allowed 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. For what it’s worth, 61 of his 84 pitches were strikes. Atlanta’s Martin Perez had a solid outing himself, allowing just 1 earned run in 5 innings of work, but it was overshadowed by the bullpen surrendering 5 of Cleveland’s 6 runs. Perez has had some tough luck this year; he boasts a 3.14 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP but is 0-1 in 3 starts.

With both teams sitting at 9-6, this Sunday Night Baseball game on NBC/Peacock should be very exciting. The pitching matchup is certainly that, as Tanner Bibee takes the hill for the Guards opposite of Chris Sale for the Braves. Bibee is 0-1 in 3 starts this year, but oddly enough, the Guards won the game in which he performed the worst. That was in the first series of the year. Since then, he surrendered just 1 run on 4 hits in 4 innings of work against the Dodgers and allowed just 1 run on 5 hits in 4.2 innings against the Royals on Monday. He doesn’t have much history against Atlanta, but the current Braves lineup is just 1-of-29 against him in his career.

Sale has been the opposite; he was best in his first outing and has regressed since. His last start was on Monday against the Angels, when he allowed 6 earned runs on 5 hits in just 4 innings of work. He also gave up 2 home runs and walked 2 batters. That said, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the savvy veteran lefty bounce back on Sunday at home. Jose Ramirez is the only Guardian that has had more than 10 at bats against Sale, and as we saw with Messick, sometimes it’s difficult for hitters to make solid contact against an unfamiliar lefty.

Scoring could be difficult to come by in this matchup between 2 pitchers that induce a swinging strike more than 12% of the time. With rested bullpens after yesterday’s 6-0 blowout, I’m expecting a low-scoring game in Sunday’s interleague rubber match.

Guardians vs Braves prediction: Under 7.5 (-105) at the time of publishing. Playable to -110.
