Cleveland Guardians vs Chicago Cubs Prediction, Odds and Picks for Tuesday, 07/01/25

Gavin Williams is an ultra-talented arm with upside to be a top-end starter and a mainstay in the Guardians rotation for years to come. I do not love his matchup against the Chicago Cubs today, however. Williams can struggle in the command department, and his 45 walks allowed through 80.2 innings of work is a prime example. The right-hander has walked 2 or more batters in 14 of his 16 starts while issuing 3 or more free passes in 8 starts including each of his last 3. Chicago is a patient lineup that is more than willing to draw ball 4, and they are also talented enough to take advantage of mistake pitches inside the zone.

Matthew Boyd is my preferred starting option in this game due to his matchup and the way he aligns with the Guardians. Cleveland has been a far worse offensive unit this season when facing southpaw pitching, and Boyd enters in good form with just 6 earned runs allowed across his last 6 starts, spanning a combined 36.1 innings of work. While not an overly attractive price point, I lean towards a win for the Cubs in this spot.
