It’s win or go home as the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners get ready to take the field for Game 5 of the NLDS. Tarik Skubal will make his second start of the series for Detroit, looking to change his fortunes against Seattle. In Game 2 of this series, Skubal was sharp, allowing two earned runs and striking out nine through seven innings pitched. However, on the season, Skubal has struggled against the Mariners, going 0-2 with a 4.58 ERA over 3 starts. 

For the Mariners, George Kirby will get the start after pitching a no-decision in Game 1 against the Tigers, where he allowed two earned runs over five innings. Kirby had an up-and-down season, going 10-8 with a 4.21 ERA, and has posted a 1-0 record with a 5.40 ERA against Detroit this year. Offensively, the Tigers have been inconsistent at the plate – but this matchup feels different. Kirby isn’t a pitcher I’d trust in this spot, and despite Detroit’s offensive struggles at times, their lineup should be able to produce runs early on. While Skubal has struggled against Seattle, I trust him far more in this situation than I do Kirby. The pressure of a decisive Game 5 won’t faze him, and the Tigers will rally behind their ace to punch their ticket to the ALCS to face the Blue Jays.
