Tigers vs Nationals Pickswise Expert Predictions
Game 2 of the doubleheader between the Washington Nationals and Detroit Tigers profiles as a pitching duel on paper. Jack Flaherty is set to start for the Tigers in this spot, marking his 17th start of the season. Flaherty pitched extremely well in a Tigers uniform last season before being traded at the trade deadline, and he decided to return to Detroit in free agency this offseason. After 2 poor starts in June his ERA has ballooned to 4.80, but he did deliver a quality start for his club during his last start. While an inconsistent arm, Flaherty has the potential to deal in this spot.
MacKenzie Gore is the strongest starting option in the Washington Nationals’ rotation, and I expect him to deliver a strong outing for his club this evening against the Tigers. Detroit is a solid offense, but Gore has been lights out this season with a 3.09 ERA and 129 strikeouts in his first 99 innings pitched this year. He has been terrific at home where his ERA lowers to 2.29 across 7 starts spanning 43.2 innings of work. I expect strong outings from both starters and lean towards the under on the total.
