The Houston Astros will head to Tampa Bay for a matchup against the Rays on Monday. The Astros are coming off a win against the Texas Ranger,s where they won via 2 home runs late in the game. The Rays are coming off an embarrassing game against the Miami Marlins where they only totaled 3 hits and 1 run. The Rays will be happy to have home field advantage after dropping the series to the Marlins. On the mound today, we will see Colton Gordon of the Astros and Ryan Pepiot of the Rays. Gordon is in his first year and has only started 1 game so far this season. He pitched for 4.1 innings giving up 7 hits and 3 runs to the Kansas City Royals. On the other side, Pepiot has pitched 50.1 innings giving up 48 hits and 22 runs. He looked great in his most recent home start where he went 6 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies giving up just 2 hits and 1 run.

These teams have very similar hitting statistics on the year. Though, in recent form the Rays have scored 29 runs in 6 games while holding a .248 batting average. The Astros have scored 22 runs over their last 7 games with a .220 batting average. Along with hitting, both teams have very good bullpens on the year. Both teams will also come in with plenty of options in relief as they both utilized very few relief pitchers in the yesterday’s games. The edge in this one can be found with our starters. Gordon gave up 7 hits and 3 runs to the Royals and they do not have the hitting power that the Rays do. Additionally, Pepiot has a 3.31 ERA this month only giving up 6 runs through 16.1 innings. Overall, I expect that the Houston bats will struggle against Pepiot, while the Rays should have no issue making contact against Gordon. All things considered, I am taking the Rays to get the win at home.
