The Houston Astros are tied with the Cleveland Guardians for the final wild-card spot in the American League. The Astros have managed just a 38-37 mark on the road this season, and it is mired in a three-game skid, losing grip on the American League West Division title to the Seattle Mariners. Now, Houston is in danger of missing the postseason completely. It turns to RHP Cristian Javier to keep them afloat, but he is just 2-3 with a 4.45 ERA this season, and 0-1 with a 7.88 ERA and .281 opponent batting average with a 1.75 WHIP in eight innings across two road starts.

The A’s have been a thorn in the side of teams down the stretch, going a respectable 7-3 in the past 10 games. They had the ball to LHP Jeffrey Springs, who hasn’t been great lately, going 0-4 with a 5.29 ERA and 1.59 WHIP across 34 IP in his past seven outings. With Javier very giving on the road, and Springs very giving everywhere lately, plus the compact dimensions of Sutter Health Park, the best course of action in this series opener is to go high on the total.
