Reasoning
While not a game I am rushing to bet from a sides or totals perspective, I do lean towards the underdog Cardinals grabbing a win at current pricing. St. Louis will remain in their home park after grabbing 2 of 3 games from the Tampa Bay Rays to begin their season. Expectations are lower for the Cardinals this season as their new look roster is much younger. Their youth has talent, however, and there will be opportunities throughout the season where we can grab some nice plus money prices. With New York finishing up back-to-back tough extra-inning games against the Pirates and now traveling from New York to St. Louis for this game, this could be one of those spots.
Clay Holmes is the scheduled starter for New York as he enters his 2nd season in a starting role with the Mets. Holmes was solid with a 3.53 ERA last season but some of his underlying metrics suggest possible regression. OOPSY does project Holmes for a solid 3.79 ERA in 148 innings this season for New York. That mark is not far off of the 4.00 ERA in 118 innings that OOPSY has Cardinals starter Kyle Leahy pegged for.
Leahy delivered a 3.07 ERA in 88 innings with the Cardinals last season in a relief role and will now transition into a starting role this year. His 3 different breaking balls indicate what type of pitcher he is, but his 4-seamer does reach mid-90s with consistency. St. Louis has the slightly fresher bullpen as New York is likely without Luke Weaver, Richard Lovelady, and Sean Manaea for this game. With wind blowing out and the aforementioned factors above, I find it worth the price to take a stab on St. Louis grabbing this win.
