I favor the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Baltimore Orioles through the first 5 innings of Thursday’s matchup between the 2 teams. Johan Oviedo is set to start this game for the Pirates, marking the sixth appearance of his season. Oviedo had his season delayed after missing last season with injury. Since his return, however, the right-hander has been effective — posting a 2.70 ERA with 24 strikeouts in his first 20.0 innings of work. His last 2 starts have each resulted in 5.0 innings with only 3 combined earned runs allowed against 2 quality lineups. He is my preferred starter in this matchup.

Cade Povich is set to start this game for the Orioles. The left-hander has started 17 games for Baltimore this season while also making 2 relief appearances. That consistent base traffic makes it hard to succeed, and — despite an uptick in strikeout rate this season — I am still not overly fond of Povich. Look for the Pirates to hold a lead through 5 innings of play.
