Padres vs Diamondbacks Pickswise Expert Predictions
The San Diego Padres have lost 7 of their last 10 games, including each of the first 2 games of this series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona has won 9 of its last 12 games after falling 4 games under .500. The Snakes will sorely miss Corbin Burnes for the rest of the season, but this club is more than capable of sustaining a run without a key piece, and I expect them to remain competitive for the remainder of 2025. San Diego saw Jackson Merrill leave yesterday’s loss early with potential injury and we could see him miss this matchup on Sunday. Merrill Kelly will look to take advantage of that absence and continue his strong stretch. The DBacks’ right-hander has tossed 13.0 scoreless innings so far this season while facing the Braves and Mariners and now draws a potentially weakened San Diego lineup.
Nick Pivetta is generally a pitcher I like, but he is the lesser of today’s starting options in my opinion. He has been lights out at home with a 2.40 ERA in 41.1 innings but on the road his ERA jumps to 4.94 in 31.0 innings of work. This is something I expected to see this season given his pitcher friendly home park that can mute his fly ball tendencies, whereas road parks don’t necessarily have that built in protection. Arizona is also a tough lineup to face and Pivetta has allowed 9 earned runs in his first 10.0 innings this month.
