The Dodgers started RHP Shohei Ohtani for his first pitching appearance in nearly 2 full calendar years, and his first appearance on the mound as a member of the Dodgers. It was more the role of an opener, as he was used for just 1 inning. That’s the same plan the Dodgers are likely to employ Tuesday, as, at the time of publishing; they are TBD for pitching plans. Things are a little in flux for the Los Angeles pitching staff, but the offense continues to keep things on a winning track.

The Padres turn to RHP Randy Vasquez, who has a 3.57 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. The problem with the right-hander is that he hasn’t gone very deep into games lately. In a 5-2 loss he allowed a solo homer, 2 hits and a walk in 4.2 IP, throwing just 70 pitches. He has allowed 8 homers in the past 7 starts but tends to limit the damage. When the Padres’ bullpen comes on, that’s not a bad thing; it is very good. With L.A.’s uncertain pitching pitcher, and Vasquez and SD’s relievers likely to fare somewhat well, let’s take San Diego on the run line as an underdog.
