The San Francisco Giants offense is not one I am overly fond of, but their front office realizes their weakness and went out to acquire Rafael Devers. That addition should help their cause offensively over the rest of the season, and they have a good chance of producing today in their matchup against the Athletics. San Francisco has been weak against southpaw pitching of late but JP Sears and his 5.09 may be just what the Dr. ordered. In 32.1 innings at home this season his ERA spikes to 6.68 where he has allowed 12 home runs and a .298 opponent batting average. He also can issue free passes with multiple walks allowed in 4 of his last 5 starts.

Justin Verlander is my preferred starter in this game, but that isn’t saying much as I don’t really like his matchup either. At 42 years old he simply isn’t what he used to be. Now a low strikeout rate arm, Verlander is issuing free passes and allowing barreled balls more than the average pitcher and now he has to pitch in a minor league park instead of his pitcher-friendly home park. The Athletics have been strong against right-handed pitching int their home park this season and I expect that continue on July 4.
