The New Orleans Pelicans will be playing the second game of a back-to-back situation when they entertain the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday evening. I expect both teams to play inspired basketball. The Hawks have the rights to New Orleans’ first-round draft pick in 2026 and right now it’s looking like it could be as high as #1, so every Pelicans loss adds another proverbial ping-pong ball into the lottery. As for the Pels, they are 2-14 and especially desperate for a win following a hard-fought 118-115 setback against Dallas on Friday night. Count on both teams playing hard and fast in this one. Atlanta is #13 in the NBA in pace of play (possessions per game) this season; New Orleans is #8 in that department over the past 3 games. As such, my Hawks vs Pelicans pick is Over 230.5.

Rookie big man Derik Queen is the reason why the Pelicans were willing to trade up and part with next year’s first-round pick. Nobody is suggesting that it’s a good trade given where that ’26 pick might end up, but Queen is certainly holding up his end of the bargain. The Maryland product has been outstanding of late, averaging 25.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 7.5 apg over the past 3 contests. For the Hawks, Jalen Johnson was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday. Johnson (22.3 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 6.6 apg) has scored at least 24 points in 5 straight outings. Atlanta is not quite as offense oriented without Trae Young on the floor (he is likely sidelined a couple more weeks), but that’s why you can get this number at a relatively modest 230.5. It’s the under for me between 2 teams that are currently in an offensive groove.
