The Minnesota Timberwolves will try to avoid a 3-1 series deficit when they host the San Antonio Spurs Sunday night. The Spurs have won 2 straight games in this series, including a blowout 38-point win in Game 2 and a 115-108 win in Game 3. Victor Wembanyama has only gotten better as the series has gone on, coming off his best game after scoring 39 points on 13-of-18 from the field. He also added 15 rebounds and 5 blocks. It doesn’t matter if the Wolves put Rudy Gobert, Jaden McDaniels or Julius Randle on Wembanyama, he has looked unaffected by Minnesota’s efforts — regardless of who his primary defender has been.

The Timberwolves started slow in Game 3, missing their first 10 shots and only scoring 1 point in the first 7 minutes, but they eventually adjusted and kept it close throughout. Anthony Edwards continues to play through injuries to both knees, but it was the first time he started in this series — scoring 32 points in 41 minutes. With Edwards only playing an average of 24.5 minutes in the first 2 games, Game 3 was by far the most minutes he has logged this series, and it will play a significant role in how his knees respond to the high usage night.

If the Timberwolves want to succeed in Game 4, they will need better performances from Randle and McDaniels. The duo combined to shoot 8-of-34 from the field in Game 3 and were -11 and -15 in plus/minus — the 2 worst on the team. These 2 play their best when they can get 2 feet in the paint and score with their size and length, but that’s tough to come by against the Spurs with Wemby controlling the lane defensively. The Timberwolves are certainly a team you can never count out, but I think the Spurs smell blood in the water. I’ll back the Spurs to find a way to win by margin through their defensive efforts, earning a chance to close out this series in front of their hometown crowd in Game 5.
