Celtics vs Pistons SGP pick: Detroit Pistons -3.5 over Boston Celtics (-106)

The maturation process of these Pistons has been fun to watch — not a lot of people saw them jumping to the top of the Eastern Conference before the season started. But stellar defense along with Cade Cunningham taking the next step in his development have resulted in their best start to a season in years. All of their success so far will be put to the test on Monday, though, as they take on one of the teams that’s chasing them atop of the Eastern Conference in the Boston Celtics.

Jaylen Brown and company are on an impressive run of 11 wins in 14 games, but this season they have fallen to the Pistons twice already and in the last 7 meetings they have covered the spread just twice. Similar to previous seasons, this team relies heavily on the 3-point shot to win games. It might be difficult to get going against the Pistons, who rank ninth in 3-point defense this season. They have held their last 3 opponents to just 32.1% shooting from downtown. For comparison, the best 3-point defense in the NBA allows opponents to shoot 33% from downtown. I’m expecting a close game, but in the end the Pistons should prevail.

Celtics vs Pistons SGP pick: Cade Cunningham 2+ made threes (-184)

For the second season in row, Cunningham is putting up big numbers on offense. This time around, though, it has been followed by team success. The Pistons are off to an incredible 30-10 SU start to the year — something we haven’t seen from them in decades.

Cade’s 3-ball has been a particular highlight, going in at a consistent 33% on 2 makes per game — which is in line with what he averaged last year. Since the turn of the year he has made a pair in 4 of 5 games played, and for the season he is at a 62% success rate with this bet (22 of 35 games). The last 2 meetings have seen him score 32 and 42 points. He is averaging 25.8 per game in the last 9 games head-to-head against the Celtics. With his 3-ball going in at a rate of 39% on 2.6 makes per game, it’s only logical for me to include him in my Same Game Parlay bet.

Celtics vs Pistons SGP pick: Jaylen Brown 2+ made threes (-215)

I’m sure most people are aware what Jaylen Brown has done so far this season. But in case you have missed it, he has been enjoying his best year as a pro — at least from an individual standpoint. He has particularly excelled in the 3 meetings with the Pistons, averaging 36 points per game on 45% from the field and 38% from three. Being down 2-1 in the regular season series means that the Celtics are playing with their backs against the wall here, hoping to avoid losing the series on the road in Detroit.

Brown has cashed on a pair of threes in 3 consecutive games, and for the month of January he is making 2.8 per game on 36% efficiency. A strong performance from him would go a long way for the men in green. He has cashed on a pair of threes in 24 of 38 games played this season (63). He has drained a three in all 19 road games played this season, cashing on this bet 12 times. Despite the Pistons being an elite defensive team, I have full faith in Brown doing well offensively.
