Here at Pickswise we have started 10-2 (+10.1 units) on our NRFI/YRFI bets, including an 8-0 run in our last 8 bets. With more than a dozen MLB games taking place each day, one of the quickest bets you can make is if a run will be scored in the first inning. There is value to be had and this market has become very popular over time. If you don’t like sweating out your bets for 3 hours, this one will only take about 15 minutes.

There are 2 NRFI/YRFI bets I like on Monday, so let’s get right into it.

New York Mets vs Atlanta Braves: NRFI (-145)

The most compelling matchup on Monday’s slate features two of baseball’s best pitchers. Max Scherzer gets the call for New York, while Max Fried takes the mound for Atlanta. Both of these starters have been strong in 2022, particularly in the opening frame. While Scherzer has missed time, his strength continues to be getting off to hot starts. The veteran has surrendered a first-inning run in just 1 of his last 8 outings this season. On the other side, Fried has allowed a first-inning run in just 1 of his last 10 appearances.

While both of these offenses are capable of putting up runs, I think early runs will come at a premium. Fried is locked in at the moment and he acquitted himself well against the Mets earlier this season. The same can be said for Scherzer, who picked up right where he left off with 6.0 shutout innings in his first appearance back from injury on July 5. Look for both starters to dominate early on, as this game will likely come down to the bullpens. I like backing the NRFI in Atlanta.

Chicago White Sox vs Cleveland Guardians: YRFI (-115)

While the previous contest was about the strengths of each pitcher, I think plenty of runs will be scored in this AL Central matchup. Lance Lynn is getting the start for the White Sox; his 2022 campaign has not been smooth sailing. Since starting his season in June after returning from injury, Lynn has pitched to a 5.33 ERA while surrendering 16 runs in 27.0 IP. He will be facing the top of the Guardians’ lineup to start the game, which features Jose Ramirez. Ramirez is hitting 6-of-17 lifetime off Lynn, including 3 home runs and 4 total extra-base hits. If Steven Kwan or Amed Rosario are able to get on base, the White Sox starter could be in for some early trouble against one of the game’s best hitters.

While Lynn has allowed a first-inning run in 3 of his 5 starts, the same can’t be said of Cal Quantrill. However, Tim Anderson, Luis Robert and Yoan Moncada all have very strong career numbers against Quantrill. Even if Lynn doesn’t surrender a run, the White Sox could absolutely take an early lead in this one. Therefore I like backing the YRFI in Cleveland.
