We are continuing the first full week of the 2023 Major League Baseball season with a 15-game schedule on Saturday. It includes 7 afternoon games, led by the Chicago Cubs hosting the Texas Rangers at 4:05 pm ET on FS1. Among the teams taking the field during the evening portion are the New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The YRFI/NRFI market has become extremely popular in baseball betting. After all, you don’t have to sit around for 3 hours (or maybe a lot less now that games are not as long on average!) to see if your bet hits; the satisfaction (or in some cases disappointment) is immediate. It all comes down to the first inning.

Here are my best YRFI/NRFI bets for Saturday, and also be sure to check out all of our MLB picks.

Miami Marlins vs New York Mets: YRFI (-104)

This will already be the second meeting of the year between Kodai Senga of the New York Mets and Trevor Rogers of the Miami Marlins. In the first matchup last week both teams scored in the opening frame and they combined for 3 runs in total. Each pitcher had terrible control problems in the early stages of that game and the first inning could have been even worse for Rogers had a Starling Marte line drive not found the third baseman’s glove.

It’s hard to think that things will improve for Rogers. Brandon Nimmo is 4-for-13 lifetime against the left-hander with 2 doubles. If Jeff McNeil gets up with men on base, watch out. He is 4-for-11 against Rogers with 3 doubles. You have to like the Mets’ chances of scoring right away, but if the Marlins come up to bat with a 0-0 tie then hopefully Jorge Soler will contribute. The former World Series MVP doubled off Senga in the previous game to bring in Luis Arraez. It should also be noted that Arraez, the leadoff hitter, went 2-for-3 against Senga.

Oakland Athletics vs Tampa Bay Rays: NRFI (-118)

Jeffrey Springs was unhittable in his first start of the season for the Tampa Bay Rays. The 30-year-old lefty worked 6.0 innings of scoreless and hitless baseball (to go along with 1 walk) against the Detroit Tigers last Sunday. In the process he struck out 12 batters. Springs now faces an Oakland squad that is 2-5 and on 3 occasions this year has scored 2 runs or fewer.

The A’s are countering with Shintaro Fujinami. There isn’t anything good to say about Fujinami’s first start of 2023…except this: his first 2 innings were scoreless, and that came while working through the likes of Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels. Like the Angels, the Rays have never faced Fujinami. There could be an adjustment period the first time through the order.
