MLB Picks Today: Expert Predictions & Best Bets for Saturday, May 16, including Dodgers vs Angels

Los Angeles Dodgers two-way player Shohei Ohtani (17) bats against the Toronto Blue Jays during the first inning at Dodger Stadium.

The week in Major League Baseball continues with a full 15-game slate on Saturday. It is headlined by a couple of regionally televised showdowns on FOX at 7:15 pm ET, with the Padres visiting the Mariners and the Mets hosting the Yankees. Other matchups include Orioles vs Nationals on FS1, Cubs vs White Sox and Red Sox vs Braves.

Here are my best bets, and also make sure to check out our MLB picks for predictions throughout the 2026 season.

Texas Rangers ML over Houston Astros (140)

When the pitching matchup is Jacob deGrom of the Rangers against a bullpen day for the Astros, Texas should really be a much bigger favorite. As expected, deGrom has been lights out to begin the season. The right-hander is 3-2 with a 2.62 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and a dominant 57-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 44.2 innings of work. Houston’s current lineup is 9-for-59 (.153) lifetime against deGrom with 23 strikeouts and only one walk. The 37-year-old last pitched on Sunday against the Cubs, firing 7.0 innings of shutout baseball while allowing just 3 hits and striking out 10 batters without issuing a single walk. Even if Kai-Wei Teng makes it through 3.0 innings (his max so far this season), there will still be a heavy dose of other relievers for the Astros. They are dead last in Major League Baseball in bullpen ERA (5.81), so that does not bode well for their chances on Saturday.

Boston Red Sox vs Atlanta Braves Under 8 (-110)

Boston’s power outage continued with a 3-2 extra-inning setback in Atlanta on Friday night. The Red Sox are now 18-26, putting them in last place in the American League East. For more than a week now, the Sox have been woeful at getting runners across the plate. They have not scored more than 4 runs in a game since May 5 and their run totals over the past 6 contests are 2, 1, 1, 3, 1 and 2. Adding insult to injury, they have to face Bryce Elder on Saturday. Elder is on fire, sporting a 4-1 record with a 1.81 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. Fortunately for the visitors, they are countering with Payton Tolle (2.78 ERA, 0.88 WHIP). Although the matchup is not an easy one for Tolle, the Braves have scored just 7 total runs across their past 3 games and Ronald Acuna Jr. remains on the injured list.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs Los Angeles Angels Under 8.5 (-108)

Can you feel good about backing an Under involving the Dodgers after they scored 6 runs on Friday? In this case…yes, you can. Scoring a whole host of runs is an aberration as opposed to the rule for the defending World Series champions these days. They have scored 3 runs or fewer in 5 of their last 8 eight outings and they have not put up more than a 6 spot since May 6. Despite the Dodgers’ 6 runs on Friday, the game still comfortably cashed the Under…because the Angels scored zero! Today’s pitching matchup figures to produce another low-scoring affair. It’s Justin Wrobleski of the Dodgers vs Jose Soriano of the Halos. Wrobleski is 5-1 with a 2.42 ERA and 0.99 WHIP; Soriano is 6-2 with a 1.66 ERA and 1.05 WHIP.
