Detroit Tigers vs Kansas City Royals Prediction, Odds and Picks for Today, 05/09/26

The Royals took the first game of this AL Central series with a come-from-behind 4-3 win on Friday night. The Tigers held a 3-1 lead going into the 8th inning, but once again the bullpen let them down and Kansas City put together a pair of late rallies to tie the game in the 8th and win it in the bottom of the 9th thanks to a Jason Isbell RBI single. Detroit’s pitching staff is extremely decimated, and the bullpen is being taxed at an alarming rate. Burch Smith is slated to start on the mound in this one, but he will most likely only be asked to cover an inning or 2. Given the state of Detroit’s bullpen, Kansas City should be able to have a strong day at the plate.

Kansas City starter Michael Wacha is holding opponents to a .200 batting average at home this season, and the Tigers are just 6-15 on the road. These teams have also been going in opposite directions over the last few weeks. The Royals are 6-2 since the beginning of May, while the Tigers enter this matchup on a 4-game losing streak and are just 8-12 since April 17. All the momentum is with the Royals, which makes them the team to back in this one.
