The Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers meet for game two of a three-game series following a low-scoring affair on Tuesday. This time around, the numbers suggest an opposite result with the pitching matchup on the mound. Jack Flaherty (5.14 ERA, 1.64 WHIP) gets the start for Detroit, a right-handed pitcher that sits in the 15th percentile or worse in xERA, walk rate and chase percentage through three starts. The 6.68 xERA is concerning, especially paired with a 7.07 BB/9. While the Royals offense has been relatively subpar, Flaherty’s arm is far from reliable and an easy fade in this spot.

Kansas City starter Seth Lugo (1.53 ERA, 1.08 WHIP) has had a much better beginning to the season on paper with two quality starts in three appearances. However, Lugo is drastically outperforming his 4.91 xERA and is due to see regression with a larger sample size. In relief for Lugo is one of the worst-performing bullpens in MLB at the moment; the Royals currently post a 5.59 combined ERA out of the ‘pen. This is an ideal pitching matchup for both offenses to bounce back after a four-hit performance each last time out, and I’m taking the over.
