Money Line Prediction
Athletics pitcher James Kaprielian is having a tremendous rookie season. The hard-throwing right-hander is holding opponents to a .200 average, and he is posting a solid 2.90 ERA through 11 starts and 62.0 innings this season. Those numbers are even better at home, as his BAA drops to .161 and his ERA drops to 1.38 when pitching in Oakland. He faced the Angels on May 21 and held them to four hits and two runs while striking out nine over 5.0 innings. That was just his second start of the season, and he has gained more and more confidence with each outing since then.
Jose Suarez will start on the mound for Los Angeles, and this will be just his third start of the season. He has made nine appearances out of the bullpen, and while he has pitched fairly well (2.29 ERA in 35.1 innings), it seems unlikely that he will pitch deep into this game. Suarez has thrown more than 5.0 innings just once this season and lefties are hitting .319 with a .938 OPS against him. That bodes well for two of Oakland’s top hitters, Matt Olson and Mitch Moreland, and the Los Angeles bullpen has struggled for most of the season. Back the A’s in this one.
Game Totals Prediction
Kaprielian has been lights out at home and he should have a strong outing in this game. Entering Monday, Los Angeles’ batting average was more than 30 points lower on the road compared to at home, and their OPS is more than 110 points lower. Oakland’s bullpen has also been solid, so they should be able to limit the damage from the Los Angeles offense.
Oakland’s offense has struggled to start the second half, and they are hitting just .220 at home this season. Entering Monday, they were hitting just .216 with a .658 OPS in July and they struggled to generate much of anything in their series against the Indians. Consider the under.
