The Los Angeles Dodgers are in a particularly rough stretch of play, which by their standards results in a 5-5 record over their last 10 games, a 21-10 record overall and first place in the National League West. The Dodgers may be operating on a different level than everyone else, but the St. Louis Cardinals are happy with their 18-13 record this season — sitting in second in a competitive NL Central. The pitching matchup for Friday night will be the Dodgers’ Emmet Sheehan vs the Cardinals’ Matthew Liberatore.

The Dodgers dropped their final 2 games of the last series against the Miami Marlins, which prompted their players to speak out about their offensive struggles. Some of the team’s most productive players over the past couple of seasons are sitting near the bottom of Los Angeles’ offensive categories, which makes a quality start from Sheehan even more important. The young righty is having an okay start to the season, owning a 2-0 record but a 4.78 ERA. Liberatore will be in tough against a motivated Dodgers lineup, and a couple of blowup performances from him this season don’t give the Cardinals too much confidence. Liberatore’s 4.75 ERA is made even worse by a 5.80 xERA and a 14.1% strikeout rate. If he allows the Dodgers to get bats on the ball, it could be a long night.
