Belmont Stakes Odds – Who is Favorite to Win the Belmont in 2024?

The current betting favorite for the 2024 Preakness Stakes is Kentucky Derby runner-up Sierra Leone. Despite finishing 2nd to Mystik Dan that day, who was just beaten in the Preakness Stakes, Sierra Leone was beaten only a nose despite covering further ground. If both horses replicate their efforts in that race then Sierra Leone could come out on top this time. Sierra Leone is trained by Chad Brown and will be ridden by Flavien Prat, who replaces Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle. Let’s take a deeper look at the Belmont Stakes odds, courtesy of FanDuel Racing.

  • Sierra Leone 2-1
  • Seize The Grey 7-2
  • Mystik Dan 6-1
  • Mindframe 8-1
  • Antiquarian 9-1
  • Resilience 10-1
  • Honor Marie 12-1
  • The Wine Steward 15-1
  • Dornoch 15-1
  • Protective 16-1

Belmont Stakes 2024 Horses and Runner-by-Runner Guide

There are 10 horses declared to run in the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday. Below is the name and number of each horse, as well as a quick guide to how they might perform from our horse racing expert Ron Wood, who has decades of experience handicapping international horse racing for global newspaper Racing Post.

1 Seize The Grey
Won maiden here last year defeating Dornoch; improved with front-running win in 2nd leg of the Triple Crown, the 9.5f Grade 1 Preakness at Pimlico; track was muddy although he’d earlier won Grade 2 Pat Day Mile on Kentucky Derby undercard on ‘fast’ at Churchill Downs; drawn to go the shortest route; has to be taken seriously.

2 Resilience
Behind two of these when 6th in the Kentucky Derby, but was caught a bit wide while chasing hot pace; potential improver.

3 Mystik Dan
The only one of these horses who contested the first 2 legs of the Triple Crown; helped by an inside run when clinging on from Sierra Leone to win 1m2f Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, before 2nd to front-running Seize The Grey in the Preakness at Pimlico.

4 The Wine Steward
Won here last year; most recently denied by Antiquarian in 1m1f Grade 3 Peter Pan at Aqueduct; more to do.

5 Antiquarian
Kept on to win 1m1f Grade 3 Peter Pan at Aqueduct from 2 of these rivals latest; more needed.

6 Dornoch
Only 4th behind Sierra Leone in the Blue Grass at Keeneland; met a lot of trouble when 10th in the Kentucky Derby, so better than he showed then, but needs a big career best.

7 Protective
Four-race maiden who needs to improve a lot, most recently behind 2 of these rivals in the 1m1f Grade 3 Peter Pan at Aqueduct, but bred for stamina.

8 Honor Marie
Raced in last after being squeezed out at the start in Kentucky Derby, made some ground before flattening out, finishing 8th; earlier 2nd in 9.5f Grade 2 Louisiana Derby was solid and he’s a May foal who could have improvement in him, which is needed.

9 Sierra Leone
$2,300,000 yearling out of Grade 1 winner; races off the pace; hangs left under pressure, but despite that won Grade 1 Blue Grass at Keeneland; wide route into the straight and waywardness cost him when nose second to Mystik Dan, who saved ground, in the Kentucky Derby; gets a tack adjustment for this race in a bid to give jockey Flavien Prat, who’s replacing Tyler Gaffalione, more control; should have more to give.

9 Mindframe
May foal; $600,000 yearling; 2-2 in minor races over 7f-8.5f elsewhere, most recently Churchill Downs on the Kentucky Derby undercard; big jump in class as well as trip, but potentially up to it.

2024 Belmont Stakes Picks, Predictions & Best Bets: Sierra Leone (2-1)

The final race of this season’s Triple Crown — to be staged for the first time at Saratoga and reduced from 1m4f whilst Belmont undergoes redevelopment — and it’s a good contest. Mystik Dan won the first leg, the Kentucky Derby, but got an inside run while SIERRA LEONE was wide on the turn before lugging left in the stretch, and there was only a nose in it at the line. Mystik Dan was then runner-up to Seize The Grey in the Preakness at Pimlico, and this will be a 3rd race in five weeks for those two.

Sierra Leone, coming in relatively fresh and with superior talent to Mystik Dan, is again the pick, having been the choice in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. His connections have made a couple of tweaks to potentially help him and he should still have improvement in him. Mindframe may have similar talent to Sierra Leone but lacks experience and may lack his stamina at this stage.
