Best 5 NFL Betting Trends & Stats to consider ahead of Week 2: Patriots crumble as underdogs

New England Patriots tight end Hunter Henry (85) reacts after an incomplete pass during the second half of a game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Gillette Stadium.

Trends, trends and more trends. When considering a pick for a game, it’s always a good idea to see the past history of the teams and if any trends are in play. Historical data can tell you a lot about how a team could perform in a certain spot. With Week 2 approaching, here are the 5 best trends to keep in mind for Sunday.

The total has gone UNDER in 12 of the Tennessee Titans’ last 15 home games

This shouldn’t be too surprising to see since the Titans are a run-first offense behind Derrick Henry. When you have one of the biggest and most powerful running backs to ever play football, you shape the offense around that person. That’s what the Titans have done so far, and they will continue to give Henry 15-20 carries every game. Their Week 1 matchup against the Saints was a low-scoring game from the start and ended up only featuring one touchdown in four quarters. Although the Chargers like to play fast with Justin Herbert slinging the ball downfield, the Titans may force the Chargers into a slower tempo offense.

The Houston Texans are 0-7 in their last 7 games at home

The Texans are right in the middle of a rebuild, so home-field advantage still doesn’t mean too much to them. They’ve lost 7 straight games at home and 17 of their last 20, and their first home game this season will come against the Indianapolis Colts. That also means it’s going to be a battle of rookie quarterbacks – CJ Stroud for the Texans and Anthony Richardson for the Colts. Of the two rookies, I was more impressed with Richardson in Week 1. The Colts enter Week 2 as 1-point favorites, so it’s up to the Florida product and a very young Colts offense to continue Houston’s home woes.

The last 3 games between the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals went OVER

One of the biggest matchups of Week 2 takes place in Cincinnati, as the Bengals look to avoid dropping to 0-2 while the Ravens look to improve to 2-0. The biggest storyline of the game is whether Joe Burrow is going to have a repeat Week 1 performance or not. We all know that Burrow was recently made the highest-paid player in NFL history, so it’s hard to expect him to have another poor performance in Week 2. Both the Ravens and Bengals have elite offenses with two of the best quarterbacks in football, so the over 46.5 is definitely worth a look, especially with the recent trend.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games as a home underdog

Jacksonville has the chance to do something incredible — give the Chiefs back-to-back losses. The last time Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs lost back-to-back games in a season was in Week 2 and 3 of the 2021 season, so it doesn’t happen all that often. But Trevor Lawrence and the Jags have the chance to do it on Sunday in Jacksonville, and history is on their side since they are 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 games as a home underdog. However, to cover this spread, the Jags don’t even need to win. They just need to lose by a field goal or less. They are 3.5-point underdogs on Sunday afternoon and one of the most popular underdog picks in Week 2.

The New England Patriots are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog

Some teams thrive as underdogs, and some teams crumble. The Patriots are the latter, which might be a little surprising since it’s Bill Belichick. But the problem hasn’t been him, it’s been Mac Jones and his receivers. New England hasn’t had a star receiver since Julian Edelman which makes Jones’ life a little bit more difficult, and when he finally found his favorite target in Jakobi Meyers, the Patriots let him walk in free agency. For their Week 2 matchup, they welcome in the Miami Dolphins, which will be this week’s edition of Sunday Night Football. The Fins are coming off a 36-34 win over the Chargers in a game in which Tua Tagovailoa had 466 passing yards and 3 touchdowns. The Patriots might be in trouble yet again as underdogs.
