I'm an NFL handicapper here at Pickswise who was raised in a household full of sports fanatics. Since I unfortunately never had LeBron James' jumping ability I wasn't able to make it to the NBA, and chose writing about sports as the next best thing. An avid sports bettor myself, I'm excited to get to write about the industry as it gets set to take off across the country. Buckle up. We have plenty of MLB games to report while we also have a little Olympics action, so there’s a lot to pore over despite most sports being off. There are a lot of big contests coming up, which always attract some big public sides. Let’s take a look at where the public money is going as bettors once again try to beat the books, with the Red Sox leading the way.

MLB: Red Sox -135 @ Tigers

Watching the 2020 Red Sox, you never would’ve guessed they’d be a public team this time around. But that’s exactly what we’re seeing, as Boston has been one of MLB’s most pleasant surprises. You could’ve got the Red Sox at 20/1 to win the AL East, and I suggested sprinkling on it, and they’re now neck and neck with the Rays. 79 percent of the bets and 83 percent of the money are on their money line at -135 over the Tigers here, per DraftKings’ internal numbers shared with us.

This one is interesting, because the Red Sox have actually lost four games in a row. As such, this might be a fade of the Tigers more than anything else. While Detroit hasn’t been nearly as bad as many expected, their offense still can’t compete with this Red Sox lineup. We’re laying it with Boston as well here.

MLB: Mariners @ Rays Over 8

Nothing the public loves more than a good over, right? Bettors often like to root for higher scoring games, and that’s certainly the case here in Tampa. 83 percent of the bets and a whopping 89 percent of the money are on the over 8 for the second game of this series.

Seattle has been hot from the plate lately, and they scored eight runs in the opener of this series. The pitching matchup is middling, and Seattle starter Yusei Kikuchi had a 6.11 ERA in five July starts. This Rays offense has the third-highest OPS in the league over the past 15 days, so they should be able to get to him. We’re siding with the public again and taking the over here.

MLB: Braves @ Cardinals Under 9

Now here’s something that we don’t see every day. A rare public under. This is one of the few spots bettors aren’t expecting fireworks as the Cardinals host Atlanta. 75 percent of the bets and 93 percent of the money have come in on the under here. The split in those two percentages indicates there have been some large volume bets on the under as well.

Max Fried has been a disappointment for the Braves this season, and Jon Lester will be making his first start as a member of the Cardinals. Lester has been terrible this year and was equally awful in 2020, so at the age of 37 it looks like he might just be done. He’s got a 5.02 ERA and 1.59 WHIP, so he could be in for a long day against a Braves lineup that still has a ton of talent. We’re fading the public and going over here.

Olympic women’s soccer: Australia vs. USA

Let’s take a look at some Olympic women’s soccer now. Team USA didn’t perform as they would’ve hoped, but they’ve still got a chance to salvage a bronze medal with a win over Australia here. Oddsmakers have set the line at +400 for Australia, +275 for draw, and -135 for Team USA in the three-way split.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, American bettors are flocking to Team USA. 77 percent of the bets and 73 percent of the money are on Team USA, while only 17 and 21 percent are on Australia. Seven percent of the bets and six percent of the money are banking on a draw. For all of our Olympics picks, check out our ‘Olympics bets‘ tab.
